Microsoft's response
The reason I can say I love them is because I can vaguely see their personality in all of their ads. What is beautiful about the whole thing is that they manage to do that without compromising the integrity of the brand. Watching a Burger King ad makes you think about Burger King, and for me, one who studies the industry, the second thought is, "Point, Crispin Porter." The same goes for their BMW campaigns. Yet you would never look at those two ads and say "damn, that was the same commercial for two different products."
Well they were given a tough task. Right now the Mac v. PC ads that Chiat Day does are spectacular. Mostly because they are so genuine. Macs are a superior product. Period. So, how can an agency combat ads that point out all of Microsoft's flaws (none of which have been fixed yet)? Well, I guess Crispin Porter decided to just avoid the subject all together. Not that I can blame them. Watch this ad and notice what it makes you think about. What do you want to do at the end of the ad? (Personally, I just wanted to go dance). Try to find a call to action, or maybe even something that would make the brand stronger in your mind. If you do find any of this, let me know. I have yet to find it. CP&B, I love you, but you need some scolding. I have to give you a minus 2.

Something I stumbled upon
"
Things I Have Learned from Children
A king size waterbed holds enough water to fill a 2000 square foot house 4 inches deep.
If you spray hair spray on dust bunnies and run over them with roller blades, they can ignite.
A 3 year old child's voice is louder than 200 adults in a crowded restaurant.
If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan, the motor is not strong enough to rotate a 42 pound boy wearing Batman underwear and a Superman cape.
If you hook a dog leash over a ceiling fan and tie it to a paint can, it does spread paint on all four walls of a 20x20 room.
You should not throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on.
When using a ceiling fan as a bat, you have to throw the ball up a few times before you get a hit.
A ceiling fan can hit a baseball a long way.
The glass in windows (including double pane windows) doesn't stop a baseball hit by a ceiling fan.
When you hear the toilet flush along with the words "uh oh," it's already too late.
Brake fluid mixed with Clorox makes smoke (and lots of it).
A six-year old can start a fire with a flint rock even though a 36 year old man says they can only do it in the movies.
Certain Lego blocks will pass through the digestive tract of a 4 year old.
Play-Doh and microwave should not be used in the same sentence.
Super glue is forever.
No matter how much Jell-O you put in a swimming pool, you still can't walk on water.
Pool filters do not like Jell-O.
VCRs do not eject sandwiches, even though TV commercials show they do.
Garbage bags do not make good parachutes.
Marbles in gas tanks make lots of noise when driving.
You probably don't want to know what that smell is.
Always look in the oven before you turn it on.
Plastic toys do not like ovens.
The fire department in my town has a 5 minute response time.
The spin cycle on the washing machine does not make earthworms dizzy.
The spin cycle on the washing machine does make cats dizzy, however.
Cats throw up twice their body weight when dizzy.
60% of men who read this will try mixing the Clorox and brake fluid. "
Olympic Reactions
I don't even know if I can successfully explain how brilliant every moment of the opening ceremony was. 15,000 performers, not one person messed up. There were just so many intricacies that all added up to a perfect performance. I'm sure everyone, or at least most people, have only positive things to say. So I will try not to waste time by repeating them.
What I appreciated most about the ceremony was how much the director focused on harmony. Not only harmony between various nations, that one, of coarse, was expected. I am talking about the many other elements of the show that were so opposite, yet complimented each other perfectly. There was harmony between teaching Chinese history, and embracing modern culture. And what was MOST fascinating was the connection between technology and human performers that made the show so perfect. Trying to wrap my brain around the feeling I got while watching 15,000 beautifully trained people perform on an LCD screen the size of a football field, well it really makes my heart race.
I am almost sad that my family decided against going to Beijing with Dominic this year, but when I think about it, it's okay. Because I really could never have the audacity to say that I felt cheated since I didn't see it live. Lord knows I would've been balling in the Bird's Nest if I had seen it anyways. Of coarse I can't put a video of the actual show on here, but check out the slide show of the various scenes in the show, it will give you a pretty good idea of why I still have goosebumps a day later.
Michael Phelps

Wow kid. Really, you just jump in the pool and break world records for a living huh? Well thank you. Thanks for taking those four years, and turning yourself into this American hero that we can count on to keep it classy and kick butt every single time. You make us proud!
Commercials Duh!
Considering how BIG the Olympics are, you would think that advertisers would take a little time to make the commercials just a little bit better. I understand they are too completely different events, but think about how much people look forward to SuperBowl ads. Every year advertisers spend millions of dollars creating what they hope will be commercials that stay in the audiences' minds forever. Then they spent 100 times that to get a spot during the game. This is the American way, and it's beautiful.
Well, the Olympics are a big deal too. We are talking once every four years, 647 of America's best athletes playing against the best athletes from around the world. We are talking about the one time we can guarantee that all of the nations will come together for a common cause (I don't care if I sound cheesy, I really mean it). So why is it that I still see the same old bad ads playing on NBC networks while I'm waiting for rowing to come back on? I know the audience is different, and the cost might be a lot more than for the SuperBowl, but out of respect for this tradition, I think a lot more advertisers should make it a point to at least try to come up with better commercials to air during the Olympics (even if you just focus on the Opening Ceremony, it is a start).
Thank you to the companies that made the effort...
Visa
Coca- Cola
McDonald's
All of these commercials are great. And I highly doubt I will forget any of them. Brilliant.

Oh Come On!
I'm talking about Publix right now. What the hell? Everything is getting smaller. Don't believe me? Turn your cereal box sideways and see how skinny it is. Or better yet, go grab some of that delicious Fruit on the Bottom Publix yogurt and check out the size. 6 #*$&% ounces. Is that a big deal, not too much, but it used to be 8 ounces.
And sure, maybe the price of the 6 ounce is a little bit less than the bigger one used to cost. But guess what? I am almost positive that the price will go up after phase one (switch out the sizes slowly so very few people notice, and take the price down a little so that those who do notice don't blog about it).
Well guess what Publix? I noticed and I'm pissed. I love advertising, I am all about making connections between people and brands. I believe this industry's image should be changed from something that is looked down upon to something that is embraced. Well people don't embrace what screws them over. So I say this to you now Publix. Get your shit straight. You have one day.

I want a Dad!
"More than 79% of Americans feel "the most significant family or social problem facing America is the physical absence of the father from the home." Research shows that the lack of a father in the home correlates closely with crime, educational and emotional problems, teenage pregnancy, and drug and alcohol abuse.
In an effort to show dads the critical role they play in their children's lives, the Ad Council has partnered with the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and volunteer ad agency Campbell-Ewald to create a new PSA campaign that communicates to fathers that their presence is essential to their children's well-being. The campaign provides fathers with the information they need to become better dads."-- Taken from YouTube

Einstein should've done Advertising.
"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough."
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."
"In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."
"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."
Take that and run with it.

I write so I don't forget
I am gloating now, but I am really proud of myself because I managed to get something great out of my internship. I contacted a really important rep, and she is interested in partnering with the FSU Hispanic Marketing Communication Center (first of it's kind by the way) for a research project. So, I want to take this, and make it my thesis. Though I have no idea what the hell I am going to do yet. If I write it down, and tell my mom about it, I will do it.
All summer I have been finding excuses not to do it.
1- What if I make AD team and I don't have time?
Well you write your thesis in Fall, the Spring is just for defending it, if I do a great job with the research and writing the paper, I will have no problem doing both.
2- I don't know what to focus on.
I can definitely find a good topic if I find out what she is interested in knowing and what has not been researched yet.
3- I'm running out of time.
Well hurry the hell up.
I like the idea that my life is starting to fall into place. It's about time.
24 hrs, I need to fill in 8 more
Internship- Mostly busy work. I expected bitch work, that would be fine. You know, pay your dues and what not. But I have spent literally days at a time walking around the agency asking to help anyone with anything. Usual response "um, I don't have anything for you now, I will try to find something and get back to you." Mind you that is after I filed every piece of paper in the department. I know they felt bad about it. So they make projects for me to do, the kind that absolutely have to be done right. So you feel important for the first 3 hours. Until you realize you have not used a single brain cell while checking that numbers match. Whatever, I know I should be more appreciative of the opportunity to get real life experience, but come on. The media department has at least 3 meetings a week with different reps. Though I ask if there will be one coming in everyday, I have been told about 5 of the at least 24 meetings in the last 8 weeks. Not going to lie though, those meetings are cool.
Work-- They really only call me to work like every 5 weeks. I'm not going to spend too much time on that. The economy is bad, suck a nut, I get it. It just sucks because it would have been fun to travel somewhere every week on the company's money. Speaking of which, I know I am not fired, because I just got another supply pack and they let me fill in for someone a few weeks ago. But I guess they are embarrassed to admit that they aren't getting as many promotions as they would like. They refuse to answer or return any of my phone calls and the other PCs are getting the same treatment. It's rude and childish, but we keep doing it because we love to travel and the pay is great when you can get it. I should go out and get another job, but the only days I can work right now are Tuesday and Thursday after 5 and on weekends (which I keep open for J & L like an idiot).
Class- It's super easy. Really boring. It's my teacher's first year doing it, so he hasn't really got his grove yet. Most of the time, instead of learning anything in class, I just feel embarrassed for him.
Gym- That accounts for about 3% of the useful things I do. I'm a fatty. I like working out once I get there, but for some reason, I don't feel anything the day after I go workout. And sometimes I actually do work hard at it. Time to use heavier weights, and do more cardio. Maybe I should just update my iPod and just go there like I did in fall. Oh where will I find the time. AND I really want to go on a diet. I'm considering going vegetarian for a while, but I really do love meet, I would only do it for the weight loss, that might not be good enough. It also sucks because healthy food is more expensive, what the hell America? For now, I'll just try cutting back on red meat, eating more turkey and fish. Oh! and no more fast or fried food. I've got to hit up the grocery store. Looks like I'm packing lunch from now on.
UWSA project- Thank god 37% of my time can be dedicated to this. It keeps me sane.
Books- I am about half way through "Made to Stick" and its pretty good. I also bought "Animal Farm" and some book on Hilter and the Third Riech.
Feels good to bitch about your life sometimes lol. I'll calm it down.
UWay Update
I am learning a lot too.
1- I learned from she-who-must-not-be-named to always remember humility, because if you don't, you may end up trying to convince a bunch of communication majors that Po' Boys is your target market.
2- Listen- its crazy how many ideas you might miss if you don't listen to the freshman who hasn't even picked a major, but knows a MILLION ways to reach other freshman.
3- Surprises are ok- apparently, sometimes the client doesn't know what he wants. Make the adjustment when your client doesn't really have a clear idea what his company/ organization does. Maybe you as an outsider can figure that out for them. Not a big deal.
4- Take all the help you can get. At first I was apprehensive because around 25 people responded to my request for AD Club's help. Well it turns out not everyone can be there everyday. People are busy. And even more important, there are like 7 members of UWSA right now, most of which are the founders. So until we recruit more members, we have a LOT of work to do.
5- Advertising kicks ass! No explanation needed.

Project!
I have another project this summer to distract me from thinking about how much time I waste on Monday - Thursday 9-4. The United Way Student Association is launching in fall and they have requested that AD club form a team to create a campaign for them. I couldn't be more excited about it. I've already had 9 people respond saying they would like to take part. So, I'll take what I learned last semester in creative and run with it.
I guarantee I will learn more from this experience than I have been learning this summer. This will be one of the first times I've ever managed a group like this. Hopefully, I will be able to teach people a lot as well. Time to think outside the box, brainstorm, say without saying, and RESEARCH (who knew I would grow to like it)! This will be my first real project with AD Club. I refuse to mess it up. How lovely!! lol
The opportunity cost is too great.
So 13 weeks at an internship. Is that enough time to learn anything about the advertising industry? Unfortunately for me, it's proving to be entirely too much time. Why? I literally spend about 76% of my time there doing absolutely nothing. I really don't understand what the problem is. It's not like I don't put EVERY effort into finding someone who has something for me to do. It's to the point where I damn near jump for joy when someone asks me to file a piece of paper. At any rate, that usually only happens about twice a week. People tell you to take initiative and get involved with everything when your doing an internship, but no one ever told me what to do when people just push you away. Or worse, put on their headphones and completely ignore you. While you sit there and wait for them to find an email they want you to go upstairs and print.
They hired too many interns. I definitely could be interning for at least one other department and everyone's work would be done well. Lesson learned, never settle. Explore all of your options, even is you don't think you're qualified. Because once you settle, you realize that you've been qualified to sit and wait for work for at least five years, back when you were "lil Vanessa."

Being busy yields being bored
No worries, the test will get done. And it will be done well. But I need to fill my to- do list with extra circulars. So here is a list of things that I decided to so this summer.
1- Rearrange my furniture in my room (the goal is to have the papazon in a corner and the TV horizontal to the bed
2- Paint the living room. Two walls. Some shade of green
3- Redecorate my room
4- Blog
5- Buy a Wii
6- Buy and read the following books
- I, Claudius by Robert Graves
- The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinback
- The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald
- Lolita, Vladimir Nabokov
